InlatPlus –
new directions in legal services – European Law in Latvia

Prof. Eugene Eteris.

Introduction

Reflecting Latvian more than six years of accession to the European Union, we have to admit that increasing spheres of national economic and social development are influenced by the European legislation. Hundreds EU directives and regulations have already entered Latvian legislation. With this in mind, InlatPlus has opened a new line of service for our present and perspective customers; we call it European Law in Latvia.
We have chosen the most vivid spheres of European laws which exert changes in Latvian way of doing business with influence on corporate and private customers’ interests, including such spheres as taxation, intellectual property rights, free movement of people and legal issues connected to the use of numerous EU funds.
More

A short description of most interesting and active spheres of European legal development follows below.

European Commission and the Parliament for legal certainty in cross-border divorces

Several EU institutions, including the Commission and the Parliament, finally agreed to resolve a complicated issue: cross-border divorces in the European Union. Although not all the EU member states agree on the move, the new provision in the Lisbon Treaty allows for enhanced cooperation to change the previous deadlock.

European Judicial Network in Civil and Commercial Matters

Intensive trade and commercial transactions among the EU-27 member states leaves room for numerous disputes, which are presently resolved in the courts with a lot of expenses involved. However, it could be cheaper and easier to go through mediation, argues the Commission. Not all the EU member states agree with the idea though the implementation of a special directive (2008) is aimed at May next year, 2011.

The mentioned legal counseling suggested by InlatPlus in the new line of service - European Law in Latvia - are not limited to the spheres described above. Present and future InlatPlus customers are free to seek advice in all their spheres of interest connected to the European law and regulations.
