As of April 1, 2026, updated minimum salary requirements for foreign nationals applying for a residence permit based on employment or for an EU Blue Card have come into force in Latvia. The required salary depends not only on the national average wage, but also on the specific industry.<\/p>\n\n

For a standard work-based residence permit, the minimum salary for a foreign employee is linked to the average salary in Latvia \u2014 approximately EUR 1,815 gross per month.<\/p>\n\n

However, it is important to understand that in a number of industries a lower threshold applies, since the average salary in those sectors is below the national average. This is particularly relevant for construction, logistics and transport, hospitality and catering, manufacturing, agriculture, as well as certain technical and blue-collar professions. In such industries, the minimum salary for a foreign employee ranges from EUR 1,511 to EUR 1,761 depending on the sector.<\/p>\n\n

At the same time, if the average salary in a particular industry is significantly higher (for example, EUR 3,077 in finance and EUR 2,861 in telecommunications services), for immigration purposes it is still sufficient for the employee to receive the above-mentioned minimum salary (i.e. EUR 1,815).<\/p>\n\n

The requirements for obtaining an EU Blue Card are higher. The EU Blue Card is a prestigious type of residence permit intended for highly qualified professionals with higher education. In this case, the salary thresholds depend on whether the profession is considered to be in shortage: the general threshold (coefficient 1.5) is EUR 2,723, while shortage occupations (coefficient 1.2) require EUR 2,178. Traditionally, shortage professions in Latvia include IT, physics, mathematics, engineering, electronics, manufacturing, and medicine.<\/p>\n\n
