I have a residence permit in Latvia based on my marriage to a Latvian citizen. We have a minor child who also holds Latvian citizenship. Unfortunately, the marriage hasn’t been successful – we decided to file for divorce through the notary. Once we divorce, I will of course lose my residence permit. How can I retain my residence permit so that I can continue living in Latvia and see my child?

As the father of a minor child who is a Latvian citizen, you have the right to apply for a five-year residence permit as your child’s natural guardian. A court order appointing you as guardian is not required – simply being specified as the father on your child’s birth certificate is sufficient.
