Can an employee resign without a notice period and without a month's notice?

21.10.2025 Aleksandrs Koposovs, the member of the board

If resigning under Part 1 of Article 100 of the Labor Law of the Republic of Latvia, one must give the employer one month’s notice and work for that period. If this notice period is not possible due to a compelling reason, then resignation under Part 5 of Article 100 of the same law without this notice period is permitted, but it is advisable to provide a document confirming the existence of a compelling reason.

The law specifies that a compelling reason may be a circumstance that, for reasons of morality and fairness, does not allow the continuation of the employment relationship.

Furthermore, if the employer accepts the reason for dismissal without a notice period, the employee may receive severance pay based on their length of service.
